  • Too long shots
  • Unclear scenes

    • Too long shots
    • Unclear scenes

How to distribute micro budget films

For many films it is incredibly difficult to get a theatrical distribution, particularly horror genre. Even if they get a distribution they go straight to video and don't make it into cinemas. This is because most of the films trying to get distributed are a low budget production. It therefore contains almost no stars which is even harder to get distributors. However, there are examples of low budget productions that got distributed such as Heretic or Paranormal Activity.

Scream(1996)
  • Budget: $14M
  • Box office: $173M

Scream 2 (1997)

Rough Cut 4

...
...
This sample scene is our 4th rough cut but this time the bedroom scene.
we re-filmed everything because we felt like it wasn't good enough and we got feedback from our audience.  We also added a lair scene.

Improvements made:
Bedroom scene:
  • Improved dialogue (still could be improved)
  • More shot variety
  • Added effect to stalking shot + shorter takes
  • Filmed TV footage
  • Added Jump-scare (although not that scary)
Carpark scene:
  • Glimpse of killer
  • Crosscutting to lair scene
